KUALA LUMPUR,Feb 11: Hindraf chief P. Waytha Moorthy declared that it does not matter whether Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik converts people, as it’s the person’s choice, but the fact remains that the latter is a “national security threat”.
“We have no objection, it doesn’t matter if one person or a hundred people convert after listening to Zakir Naik, that is freedom of religion.
“But the fact remains that he is a national security threat and he is wanted in India, as early as this year he was wanted for money laundering,” Waytha told The Malaysian Times (TMT) today.
This comes after reports claimed that the controversial televangelist Zakir Naik had converted Indian origin student R.A. Shivaleela, during a talk at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).
Shivaleela, 40, claimed that she choose to convert out of her own violation, adding that she found Zakir Naik’s explanation on the existence of Allah both satisfying and clear.
On Feb 2, Waytha had served a legal notice to the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi demanding answers on the whether Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik is indeed roaming free in Malaysia.
In the legal notice, Hindraf’s lawyer Karthigesan Shanmugam claimed that, “hate preacher Dr.Zakir Naik has been permitted by the Home Ministry to enter Malaysian borders, reside and to deliver lecturers and sermons in Malaysia.”
“Should you as the Home Minister fail, refuse and/or neglect to provide a satisfactory reply, we have strict instruction from our client to institute legal proceedings in the interest of National Security against you in the capacity of Home Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs responsible for the Security and peaceful co-existence of the people of Malaysia to prevent any undesirable activities of Dr. Zakir Naik and to seek his immediate removal from Malaysia,” read the legal notice.
Dr Zakir Naik who has been banned in several countries is claimed to be in Malaysia, where he was said to have conducted Friday sermons in a Masjid in Arau, hosted by the Perlis Islamic Religious Affairs Perlis Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council, and the Office of Perlis Mufti.
It was also said that the Dr Zakir Naik a fugitive wanted in his homeland India for terrorist links is alleged to have been given a permanent resident status under the sponsorship of a prominent individual with a “Datuk” title.
